Tyga feels comfortable on his remix of Tay-K’s “The Race.”
After his breakout single “The Race” took off, the teenage rapper
Tay-K found himself at the center of mass-media attention. Rappers like
Lil Yachty remixed his track, and it currently stands at over 44 million
views. “Fuck a beat, I was trying to beat a case,” raps Tay-K,
referring to the criminal incident that spawned “The Race” in the first
place. Yet his transgressions may very well have caught up to him, as it
was recently announced that the young rapper was set to be tried as an
adult. While that may not bode well for Tay-K, the impact of “The Race”
continues to be felt, and Tyga has officially added his attempt to the
expanding list of remixes.
Tyga kicked off the week by unexpectedly dropping another single
called “My Way,” produced by 808 Mafia, yet his take on the Tay-K banger
is the true highlight of the pair. While Tay-K’s lyrical inexperience
imbues the original with a charming sense of rawness, Tyga is far more
finessed on the mic. His confidence is never brash, instead, it feels
well earned. Despite that, Tyga’s rendition does lack some of the
original’s urgency; after all, “The Race” was recorded after Tay-K went
on the run from police, and epitomizes the whole mantra of “write what
you know.”
